A brooch and necklace shaped like La Cicciolina, Woody Allen, Karl Lagerfeld, Magnum P.I. or Sebastian Tellier? Sure, why not?, say Yazbukey designers Emel and Yaz.
On their website, they describe themselves as ottoman princesses "Descendents of Mehmet Ali Pasha, King of Egypt." That's longhand for the fact that they're Parisians born in Cairo and Istanbul respectively. E to the X to the O to the ... you get the picture.
The princesses work mainly in acrylic, with smatterings of twisted rope and metallic leather. The gift bow you see in these shots is made of that leather, and comes in a brooch and mounted on headbands. Check out their fine jewellery collection loaded with gold and diamonds, the hands have that off-kilter Yazbukiness, but there's plenty of serious(ish) pieces like hte bug and flower brooch too.
And so we had a quick chat about their general fabulousness:
Hickville: Is it more exciting to be working from Paris than say Istanbul?
Emel: Both cities are inspiring, it's totally different.Well Paris has always been an inspiring city for fashion, art and food, but Istanbul is inspiring in a totally different way. I just can say that we are lucky to live between Paris and Istanbul.
Hickville: How do you feel about creativity in Paris at the moment?
Emel: There's always creativity in the air, right now it's taking a nap, or more a beauty sleep.
Hickville: What keeps your minds active, your collections inspired? Museums? Art? Movies?
Emel: A lot of different things, travels, music, art, muses, antiques, friends, daydreaming, fairytales, life, movies, flea markets, just going around and being curious...
Hickville: If you could work in any material, what would it be? What materials will be in the next collection?
Emel: We will continue developping our acrylic line, mini bags line and hand-made jewellery, and hopefully we will be doing our second precious line (diamonds, gold and precious stones).
Buy the Yazbukey goodness, including the mouse purse and little box bag, at Order and Progress. They're having a sale, by the way.
